What is chin surgery?
Chin surgery, or mentoplasty, refers to 2 types of procedures: chin enhancement with an implant or chin reduction surgery. Reduction surgery, which is done by sculpting the bone to the desired size, is usually performed on women and men who have protruding chins or whose chins are too large in relation to their other facial features.
Chin surgery may also be performed at the same time as nose surgery to ensure the size and shape of the chin stays balanced with the changes being made in the size or shape of the nose.
Women and men with weak or receding chins use chin augmentation to achieve a stronger facial profile. This type of chin surgery relies on implants to enhance the size and shape of the chin.
What is a chin implant?
A weak chin has a significant impact on a person’s appearance. It makes the neck appear fleshy, accentuates the size of a normal nose, and makes a large nose seem even more immense. When the chin is augmented with an implant, a strong chin profile is restored and overall facial structure is pleasantly balanced.
Chin implants come in a variety of sizes, shapes and preformed materials that are biocompatible with human tissue. The type of implant used is determined by the size of the existing chin and the changes desired by the patient. At the time of surgery, the physician may further customize the implant by making slight changes to its shape.
What should you expect during and after chin implant surgery?
The incision will be made just under the chin, where a scar is barely noticeable, or inside the mouth, where the gum and lower lip meet. Your surgeon gently creates a space, a pocket in front of the chin bone and under the muscles, the insert the implant. While the results are immediate, you won’t be able to see the full effect until swelling goes down in about 6 weeks.
Chewing should be limited after the procedure, so you’ll consume a diet of liquids and soft food for a few days. While you can get back to your usual activities in about 10 days, you’ll still need to avoid strenuous activity for a few weeks.
